Well, he could have said that he fired both barrels in the air and the shot must have come down and 'landed' on the bear. That way he could claim a 'vice-presidential' killing obviously freeing him from any wrong doing.

Sounds to me like they have a larger than should be, bear population. If they are looking for food in a populated area, there's a problem with their regular food supply. Wild animals only do this if they are a) diseased or rabid, or b) they are in desperation for food. Now I know bears, once they get a "taste" for human food, get spoiled (no pun intended). Maybe Massachusetts should look at their bear management...instead of endangering humans.

I am a stickler for following laws, but this is a very rare case I'd shoot him for sure - better alive in jail, than dead, in this case.
