the plate is there to keep pressure on the striker assembly spring. It won't take that much abuse but if you are going for a custom one like these from NDZPerformance then go with a billit aluminum.

So, should I plan to replace this as soon as reasonably possible? It's not like I plan to abuse the gun, but I don't want it failing on me.

You don't have any worries of the stock back plate failing. As far as I know there has never been a failure in the history of Glock and it's on of the most popular weapons in the market. My suggestion is if you are going custom with laser engraving the go with the billit aluminum as it will hold the laser engraving better.
