Can you tell tell what Gen by the serial number?

So, what exactly is the answer?
I can see the differences. If you don't know the visual clues, just type your question to the web...
Gen 1 - 82-89 Has a smooth pebbled finish in the grip, no rail.
Gen 2 - 89-97 Has checkering on the front and back stap, side pannels have the Gen 1 pebble finish, no rail
Gen 3 - 97- 09 Finger grooves on the front strap, thumb rest, equipment rail and the introduction of the RTF finish around 06
Gen4 - 09-now - Adjustable backstraps and textured finish on side straps.
